String theory finally prooved by GravSim
11/15/08 at 12:45:43

Breaking News :
Amateur astronomers in Europe  have come up with a final proove of string theory ...
The team was able to show - using the Gravity Simualtor software - that some parts of our solar system evolve to a gigantic string .
They simulated the motion of a lot of asteroids now orbiting  between Mercury and Saturn and found the asteroids will line up to a gigantic linear structure , a kind of string ,  after some hundred of years .
The team started the simualtion on 01/04/2008 but waited till now to publish their results .
Here's a time animation of the string they've discovered so far Huh

Smiley Old trick . Orson Welles used to do things like that .
Here's the sim .
I enjoyed the winding up .

So, how did you actually figure out how to make that 'string'?

Is simple in fact : In Onlyplanets.gsim create 700 bodies with SMA linear from 0.3 to 9 AU.
Take care to give them an anomaly of zero , and here they go , starting on a line ...
Of course the animation was reversed in time  Smiley

The equipe of astronomers is really puzzled now ....

After more observations of the sky they discovered a circular string formation , residing now between the orbits of Jupiter and Saturn .
The structure seems to approach Earth with a velocity of several kilometers per second .
Earth however is not in danger as is schown in the following animation .   Smiley
Credit : GravitySimulator.
Its not clear yet what the origin of the string might be ...and if other formations will be found in the future

As could be expected :
I've just been informed by the team of astronomers they've indeed identified another mysterious structure between Saturn and Jupiter .  Shocked
Just as the structure above the newly discovered one is also  heading to Earth .
Here's a GravSim simulation animation of this new ring structure .

This is getting really scary : things are getting worser and worser .  undecided
The latest discoveries let us suspect a whole bunch of degenated strings is heading for Earth right now...
Nearest approach to Earth is expected around 2012 !

You're just having way too much fun with this aren't you Wink

How stable are these? Do they break up after several "bounces" or do they last longer? Is this all just done with gravity or are you using thrust as well (beyond the initial "inward push" anyway).

And how are you figuring out that they're stable?

Well , it's just gravity , without tricks (without thrust ) , and yes , it makes really fun.  Cheesy
The orbits are stable without doubt if they don't interact with Jupiter ( which I left out ) .
Here's a beautiful one ....

For those who can't run immediately the above sim : here's an animation of the superstring system .
I think Gravity Simulator is really a paradise for the science-fiction guys ...

Edit : the above animations may be confusing and not seeming to represent  what we think to be normal orbits .
But the orbits are really normal ....ELLIPTICAL ...orbits .
Try to follow one particle and it will become clear it orbits in a perfect ellipse
The illusion of weird motion is due to the fact that several particles are displayed with a slightly different orbital parameter .
