Jupiter  moon families
09/27/08 at 14:11:13

A while ago Tony put together the Jupiter moons in the following simulation .
http://www.orbitsimulator.com/gravity/articles/joviansystem.html

I've run this simulation for ca. 40 years , had the values of SMA , eccentricity and inclination outputted in a .txt file and represented it in the following graph .
X-Axis covers the SMA evolution , y-axis the eccentricity of the moons .
The different moon families, especially between  0.10-0.20 AU are clearly visible in this plot .

If the same data are respresented in a SMA- Inclination graph , as herunder , the retrograde orbits of the outer moon families  become very clear .
No member of the four outermost families has a prograde orbit .
Some sources claim the outermost moon is temporarly captured and will be ejected from the system .

A question for Tony : I would like to analyse also the Saturnian Moon system . I've done this already using the fullsystem.gsim data . This simulation contains  42 moons of saturn I think . In the meantime the number of moons of Saturn has increased to 60 .
It would be very nice  to have an update of this simulation .  Can this be done ?

I made this one in August, so it should be up-to-date.

The Jovian moon families that are high inclination are about halfway to the hill sphere radius aren't they? But they're stable because they're retrograde?

yes indeed . In praxis the stability is only given by 40% ? (see Hill Discussion ) for prograde orbits .

Thanks Tony .
I ran the simuation for more than fifty years . I think 52 moons of Saturn are in the simulation .
Herunder are the plots of variation of  eccentricity and inclination of the moons as a function ( of the also varying ) sma.
Compared to Jupiters moon system the Saturnain system looks completely different .
Whereas Jupiter has families in the outer regions Saturn rather has coorbitals , orbiting at the same SMA but with different eccentricity or inclination .
In this plot Titan is only a tiny dot at ca. 0.08 AU

Saturnian system : inclination vs Sma .
While Jupiters outer moons all have a retrograde orbit , Saturn has retrogrades within the progrades orbits.
