I had to do something similar for my own board...  actually I've been able to trace many of the spammers on my board from the ukraine...  so I've started banning IP addresses.  
 
So far my daily fake-account-kill numbers have dropped to zero, but I'm sure they'll find another way around a ban.

I have had the same issue for the forums I run. Unfortunately IP banning sometime doesn’t work. If you have a light traffic, I would just manually authorize people. Make them wait 24hrs for a response.

While I have not experienced it myself, I know how some friends of mine have had their Yahoo groups disbanded because of sabotage.

Hi, welcome.  I don't plan on adding that in the near future, but this an on-going project, so maybe one day.  Time dialation is not very significant in the types of simulations this program is good for.  It takes millenia of computer sim time just to model Mercury's precession, and compare it to what it should be when GR is accounted for.

Hello, everyone.
 
Sorry I haven't posted in awhile.  That will change soon, as I've recently completed some of the projects that have consumed so much of my time.  Anyway, I've actually been using Gravity Simulator for quite some time now.  I mainly use the program to help out with orbital computations in (mostly fictional) planetary systems that I create or help create for the Celestia program.
 
At any rate, Gravity Simulator is a great program that I will no doubt continue to use.  Later!

You may need to have a certain number of posts before the attachment button appears.  And it probably doesn't accept .exe files for obvious reasons.   You could e-mail it to me if you like and I can post it for you.

I'm LordHyperbole.  So named because I keep losing planets...  
 
I'd like to say thanks for making this software freely available. I write science fiction & fantasy, and since I found it a few days ago, I've been trying to find a configuration in which something resembling the stellar system I want will remain stable long-term.  A few of my planets are well behaved and were still happy after 350 Ma., at least, but the rest had bought a one-way ticket out of town during the night...
 
My maths knowledge isn't up to the task.  I'm hoping to pick up a few pointers from folk who really know what they're doing.

I have some issues with the software.. I can't figure it out. The tutorial is not good enough, if you ask me. It explains what the different dialog boxes do and how the menus work in a good way. But it would be great if there was a tutorial for, say, putting a planet in orbit around another planet. Like: "Now we are going to put planet B in orbit around planet A." And then explain it step by step. Like:
"1. Click here to bla..bla..bla.
2. Click there to bla..bla..bla.
3. Input numbers over here to set the bla..bla..bla.
4. Press play and sit back. Enjoy!"
 
A lot of words here I know. I hope you don't think I am angry, cause I am not. It would just have been much better if there was explanations too, and not just "this can do that, and that can do this." I hope you know what I mean.

Try this:
 
I. File > New
A. Objects > Edit Objects
B. Change "Name" from "Object 1" to "Sun"
C. Change "Color" to "Yellow"
D. Press OK.
E. Press the [-] button on the screen scale interface until it reads > 4AU
 
II. Objects > Create Objects
A. Name: Earth
B. Mass: 1 Earth Mass
C. Diameter: 1 Earth Diameter
D. Semi-major axis: 1 AU
E. Press Create
F. Sit back and enjoy watching the Earth orbit the Sun!
 
 
III. Use the Focus Object interface and choose Earth
A. Use the Screen Scale interface and zoom in until Earth is larger than a single pixel.
B. Objects > Create Objects
C. Name: Moon
D. Mass: 0.0123 Earth masses
E. Diameter: 3000 km
F. Semi-major axis: 384000 km
G. Press Create.
H. Sit back and enjoy the Moon orbit the Earth!
 
This should get you started.  If you want, you can look up more accurate values for the Earth and Moon' orbital elements, including inclination and eccentricity.
There's also lots of step-by-step explanations in this forum.
 
If you need help using the program, make sure to ask here.  We'd love to see the simulations you create.

You can use gravity simulator to check out the various Neptune:TNO resonances and see what happens... best thing to do is just play around and come up with your own scenarios and see if anything interesting shows up (I wonder if one could try out a Capture scenario for Triton?)

Just confirming my account.  I am a Wikipedia editor.  Wikipedia takes MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) to a hopefully a useful level.  It is more productive than online chess.

Thanks for this wonderful program. I'm new to the field, and taking a quick course in celestial mechanics Smiley
 
I want to know how to use gravsim to observe (and measure) the precession of the perihelion of a planet, typically, Mercury.
I suppose I have to zoom in close to Mercury's orbit, take note of the values of the classical orbital elements near perihelion, and after that compute the perihelion using an external tool, but I'm not sure if there's an easier way.
 
If I do that for each orbit, I should be able to observe the precession of the perihelion, right?
And that precession would not include the relativistic effect, right?
 
Any suggestions? what tools/formulas can you recommend me to use?

Hi everyone!
 
I came across your program while looking for cheep/free good simulators that I hope can help me verify the stability of some hypothetical systems (yeah, "another Trekkie/B5/&other sci-fi nut" Roll Eyes ).  
 
I saw that several folks here have devolped some interesting results from playing around with it, so this looks like I finally found a good starting place.  
 
I know I'm going to have LOTS of questions once I've downloaded the simulator, so just warning you all in advance! Grin

Hey, doing book research and your gravity simulator came up. I'm a little confused with the whole system, since if it is put in too fast of a speed in a full system it ejects earth a little more than half a light year outside the system after less than 300 years. The same simulation done slower has a much greater stability, with only a few shots at random galaxies by Jupiter's moons.

Any numerical simulation loses accuracy with large time steps.  Keep your time step under 2048 to retain reasonable accuracy for solar system simulations.  Depending on what you're trying to do, you can adjust this accordingly.  If you post here, you can receive help on setting up your systems.

I've (finally) downloaded GravitySimulator and would like to try to use it to develop some spacecraft trajectories. One of the orbitsimulator web site's pages describes a simulation with accelerating particles. Unfortunately, its link to the configuration file gets a "page not found" error.

Is there a typo in the url or is the file actually missing?

Hi Selden.  It's great to have you here!
There was both a typo (I misspelled spiral as sprial), and the directory was wrong.  I've fixed both, so it should work now.
 
Be sure to upgrade to the latest beta version.  Download these files into your Gravity Simulator folder, and use the exe rather than the gravitysimulator.exe from the install.

i'm Astrella from Germany. If we have clear skies i like viewing the sky through my Meade LX200 12" in my backyard observatory.
 
Yesterday i got a question, how our solar system will behave, if one of this planets would vanish.
Well, i found Tony and his fine program. But i had no fun with the program. The program could be startet only once. The second time i got only a black background and it could not be closed the normal way by clicking the close button.
 
So i registered here and found the beta thread. I downloaded feb version 2009 and its an amazing peace of software Tony created.
 
Thanks Tony, i already could show a friend what happens when e.g. Jupiter would be removed from our solar system.

Hi Astrella.  Welcome!
I regularly use LX200s.  I have access to my university's observatory which is a 10 minute walk from my house.  We have 2 LX200 12" and an LX200 16".  But skies here are usually overcast, and light pollution is a big problem.  It was cloudy last night, so I missed the Saturn ring plane crossing.
 
As you found out, Gravity Simulator 2.0 doesn't work well with European versions of Windows.  That's because they store numbers using commas instead of periods for decimals.  But the Beta version solves this problem.  Any time you perform an experiment, post the results here!

Is there a way to get an oblique view of a star system in Gravity Simulator?

I just found your simulator when searching for solar sail calculators. I'd done a trivial calculator many years ago when first learning web scripting and wanted to try to do something more capable. A brief look at your program suggests I can do something adequate by using the auto-pilot although some straightforward enhancements to the sim would help greatly. Do you have a "wish list" thread  Wink
 
I note the board says "IP logged", will posts from other IPs be rejected or is it only logging? I expect to be accessing the board from home and work (lunch time only of course).

Just joining up to talk with others about simulation programming methodology and such. I'm an undergraduate Computer Engineer who is very interested in the simulation of Physics problems and chemical processes. This program seems like a very good example of well executed simulation. Imagine my surprise when I clicked a link from a post on PhysicsForum in 2004 and came here to a site still active some 6 years later. Good job maintaining such a complex project, Tony.

hello! this program looks pretty cool Cheesy ive been using it for a few days now.  
is there any way to see how many objects are in the sim without counting them out? if there is, i couldn't find it. i started a planet formation sim yesterday and i thought it would be a good feature if there was a window you could open that tells you how many objects there still are (to record collisions), and what the biggest/most massive object is.

You are encouraged to update to the latest Beta version of the program.  There is a thread in this forum that tells you how.  The following features I describe might only be available in Beta.
 
If you press menu Objects > Delete Objects, then press "Select All", then hit "Delete" you will be given a warning prompt:  "Do you wish to delete these 112 objects?" Then press "No" so you don't delete your objects.  Now you know how many there are!
 
Gravity Simulator creates a file called collisions.dat which should be readable in any text editor.  This file should be in your GravitySimulator folder.  It records the time of each collision, as well as the objects that collided.
 
There currently is no way to quickly identify the biggest/most massive object.  You could open the Objects > Edit objects, and scroll down the dropdown list while keeping an eye on the mass value.

I joined because Gravity Simulator seems to have a lot of interesting simulations that I'd like to run on my simulator, and I'll probably have questions. Cool. I tried some of the named system (Gliese, Pegasi, etc) and didn't see anything, but the 'artificial' systems (e.g. the cannon, four body system etc) were visible and worked. This was in Firefox 3.0.15.

You don't see anything because I had changed the default zoom so that you can better see things on a mobile browser, since I wanted to test some systems (two-body, four-body, and cannon) on-the-go. I set it up so distances are approximately 1km/pixel at 1x zoom, and at the default -1000x zoom, if the canvas size is 1200x800, you'll see a 1200000x800000 km window of space. Considering that Neptune is approximately 4.5x10^9 km away from the Sun, and even Jupiter is approximately 7.8x10^8 km away from the Sun, a window 1.2x10^6 km wide is pretty small. I think I'll probably change the zoom to see those systems by default in a web browser, since I just ported the web app to a mobile app instead.
 
The named systems aren't too scientifically accurate. I just created them to get a sense of the scale of extrasolar systems. The radii of the planets are also not at all accurate, since I set them up so I can actually see them orbiting the Sun without having to zoom in too much, but that will probably change as well since I'll change how bodies are rendered if they're too small to be seen at the current zoom level.
 
If you want to try something nice, I recently added the ability to view horseshoe orbits. Just select the Sun-Jupiter System, press R to go into a rotating reference frame, press T to turn on trace, and hold M to extend trace length until the trace doesn't get erased.

Oh hey, that works. I just changed my name myself (from Mal to EDG)! I found something in the PM Preferences box page lets me do that (which is odd, as on other boards people usually aren't allowed to change their own usernames themselves).

Great that works okay  Smiley As I said, I've mentioned this app to someone working on his planet x generator plugin for Cinema 4d. Cinema can import spread sheet type data, as can all of the 3d software that's used for almost photo real animations. It might be a bit of a faff to do it but I think it would be worthwhile.  
 
An instance of this. Once a guy came on a 3d board and announced that he'd got a NASA contract for a Mars lander. He then said he'd ask if he could put the drawings up!!! To everyone's credit, he was told not to do anything so silly.  
 
Anyway as stated in an earlier post an image done with planet x generator of a Mars with an ocean.

Hi. I installed GS 2.0, which runs nicely but slower than I hoped.
 
I tried to run three different betas (22-APR-07, 01-Feb-11, and 08-Jun-11), the earlier ones to try to set intervals to 1 second per some of the comments.
 
While the base GS 2.0 works, none of the betas do. They consume 100% CPU and stop responding so I have to terminate them. I tried letting windows do its compatability thing, and it appeared to work briefly but failed to load another gsim.
 
For the 22-Apr-07 version, I created a new directory and populated it with the new codeoptomizer.dll and resume.gsim per the instructions. No luck.
 
My primary interest is in modelling asteroid orbits and their modification, so I'm most interested in running A2004MN4.gsim and variants of it. But I can't get it to work at all with the betas.
 
I have a Windows 7 64-bit OS, running on a Sandy Bridge (Intel) Core I7 processor (would be nice if it could use more than one, but I understand).
 
Any suggestions?

Hi and welcome.
I'm out of town for a week and internet is spotty, so if I don't reply quickly, that's why.
 
Let me just cover the basics of running betas.
1.  You must first have installed Gravity Simulator 2.0 on your computer.  The setup package creates some dependency files that the beta versions will need.  So if you're downloading the beta onto a different computer than 2.0, that might be your problem.
 
2.  You must download the beta executable.  You can put it in your Gravity Simulator directory, or you can create a new directory for it. Wherever you put it, there must be a resume.gsim in that directory.  Codeoptomizer.dll is optional.
 
3.  If resume.gsim is corrupt, it will crash the program as you describe.  Just to make sure, delete resume.gsim, copy any of the existing gsim files into the same directory as your beta.exe , and rename it resume.gsim
 
4. If codeoptomizer.dll is causing your problem, you can find out by hiding the file.  Either remove it from your directory, or rename it so Gravity Simulator can't find it.  Codeoptomizer.dll duplicates some of the code in the VB version of Gravity Simulator, but codeoptomizer is written in C++, so it compiles into faster code.  If the file is missing, Gravity Simulator will execute a slower VB version of the same code.
 
5.  What country are you in?  Some people using European versions had some problems with version 2.0.  The betas seem to have fixed these problems.  The symptom was that Gravity Simulator ran just fine the first time around, but the resume.gsim created by European Windows was corrupt because it uses commas instead of decimal points.
 
Let me know if any of this helps!

1) Yes, I first installed GS 2.0 on the same computer, and ran it against the Apophis simulation.
 
2) Two of the betas I downloaded into the Gravity Simulator directory. Neither worked at all (they just go compute bound).
I downloaded the third beta, codeoptimizer.dll, and a different resume.gsim into a subdirectory. It failed the same way.
 
3) I copied A2004MN4.gsim into the gravity simulator directory, renamed it to resume.gsim, and tried the 2011FEB01 beta, which failed as before. Then I tried the original 2.0, and it worked perfectly. Note that when I did the copy and rename, Windows required me to provide admin privileges. I figured that's not a problem, because the regular 2.0 worked fine.
 
4) I renamed codeoptomizer.dll, it still failed the same way. I noticed that it is using 13% cpu, not 100%. But I'm running a quad core processor, with dual threads on each, so maybe that is 100% on the one thread of the one core.
 
5) I'm USA (St. Augustine, Florida)
 
I had thought the problem might be related to running a 64-bit Windows 7.
 
I just tried the 22APR2007 beta (in its own directory), and it worked correctly with the resume.gsim provided in the directions. I exited and tried it again, and it failed (it becomes non-responsive, doesn't even title the time window). I then renamed the A2004MN4.gsim as resume.gsim, ran the original GravitySimulator.exe in this directory, and it is MUCH faster with this version of codeoptomizer.dll. I created another virgin copy of resume.gsim (from A2004MN4) and tried the beta again - it immediately went non-responsive.
 
Any other ideas? Anything I can do to help isolate the problem?

At the moment, I'm stumped.  If 2.0 runs on your computer, then the betas should too.
 
I could try making a setup.exe for the beta version.  Perhaps installing it on your computer rather than simply downloading an executable will solve the problem.  But this will have to wait, as I'm out of town for a week.
 
You'll probably like the next beta version if you're working with asteroids and how their orbits are modified.  It has dynamic time step, so you can let the sim run at fast time steps, and the sim slows down for you when an asteroid passes close enough to a planet to compromise accuracy.
 
Version 2.0 is still very capable.  In the meantime you could work with it until I figure out a fix for you.   Thanks for the bug reports!

I'd like some advice. My primary interest is modelling asteroid deflection.
 
My first target is Apophis, and I've been playing with the A2004MN4.gsim model, and I decided to update it with the latest data from Horizons to see if the expected tiny differences in updated data made a difference in the April 13, 2029 close encounter.
 
I queried Horizons for Sun-centered coordinates for Apophis, the Earth, and Moon on 08-MAR-2028 and carefully entered the new data (and new start time) into a copy of the model. I also made appropriate changes for "geosynchronous".
 
Unfortunately, even with a step size of 1 second, this model shows Apophis missing the Earth by about 200,000 km on 14-APR-2029 (and on the wrong side).
 
I've triple-checked my numbers and dates.
 
What did I do wrong, or what should I do differently? Barycenter coordinates? Do I need to add in Jupiter, Venus, and/or Mars to get it right with the longer simulation?

Can you post your .gsim file?
It sounds like you did everything correctly.  At a time step of 1 second you should have good results.  I just tried what you described, and even at time step 256 my results were much better than 200,000 km.  Here's my sim:

I don't see a difference between your numbers and mine! (At least for the Sun, Earth, and Apophis)
 
But I still see the difference in the results.
 
I've attached my gsim file. It has the same objects as your A2004MN4.gsim, plus (1) I added a duplicate to Apophis called "New", which I then apply a series of thrusts to, and (2) I added Jupiter to see if that would help (it made no difference). It worked much as I thought, bringing Apophis close to the Moon in April of 2030. Then I tried to apply the latest numbers, and it doesn't work.
 
Note my simulation does turn on graphics and changes the focus and scale a couple of times. I generally start it, turn off graphics, and let it run until they turn back on by themselves around April 12, 2029, in time for the close approach. Incidentally, I'm mostly applying thrusts of the order of a few cm/s per month (things we can do with ion thrusters).
 
It's probably something simple and stupid I did, and can't see!
 
Also, I don't see where you get your numbers for the 2004MN4 January object, so it is simply wrong. At one point I just ran your model backward until 08-MAR-2028 and used those numbers, but somewhere I screwed that up.
 
And I still don't have the beta working. I was hoping a real "beta install" might help, although I don't see why!

I'd really recommend switching to phpbb3 to be honest - it's much better. I'm not sure if you could port over the posts from here, but you could keep this as an archived forum and start afresh on a new phpbb3 one maybe?

Validation complete?
I'm a NMSU astrophysics major who is currently researching p type binaries and their potential for hosting terrestrial Earth like planets. I've been using gravity simulator for about two years now.
My current project is modeling a p type binary with at least one planet to demonstrate stability of orbit. I found interest in this topic after reading the Rare Earth Hypothesis's conclusion that a planet without a moon would be inhabitable for complex life. Though I do not necessarily agree with this conclusion I'm intrigued in finding other ways that tidal forces can be present on a planet without a large moon.  
I look forward to learning what I can from the forum.

Hey guys,  
 
just introducing myself.
I am a screenwriter (actually I work in a team of screenwriters, you may call us legion, for we are many, lol), and we are working on a project writing the script for a TV series pilot that we should have up to delivery by this coming December.
I guess you folks are just the ideal crowd to help me with some questions I have. I've been trying to crunch Gravity Sim by myself, but I don't seem to get the handle of it.

Welcome aboard! It's been pretty quiet around here for a while, but don't be afraid to ask questions - I think the hardcore regulars are still around to answer them, they're just lurking Smiley. I am a newcomer to the forum. And we will see how much I can participate...
 
The first time I fell in love with gravity simulations (games, I should say) was with that small java game around 2004 . Since then I have tried playing orbiter, used Kerbal Space program quite a bit, and also toyed with GMAT from NASA (an interesting solver).
I had also built a basic simulator implementing solar winds, and displaying plenty of funny things, such as gravity fields, wind field, sphere of influence...
 
But I was looking for a simple application, light enough to be used on my netbook, and that would allow me to fly a space craft without having to wait ages for the sim to propagate. And Gravity Simulator might do the trick.
 
So, hello everybody ! And let's investigate that piece of software.

New member here with career in aerospace and energy. Have primarily worked on geocentric orbital mechanics for numerous satellite and rocket programs with some small work on interplanetary trajectories. Always wanted to pursue more general astrodynamics work and this looks to be a great tool and great group of members. Still working a few programs but more interested in developing educational activities.
